
Getting Wide-Format Low-E Glass Heating Right
If you’re working with Low-E glass wider than 3 meters, you know the struggle. Standard infrared lamps just don’t cut it. You end up with those annoying cold spots that mess up your thermal profile. We deal with this by building custom, ultra-long infrared heating units. They’re made specifically for the preheating zone of your tempering oven, so you actually get the coverage you need.
The battle with length and power
Here’s the thing: when you build a heating unit over 3 meters, physics starts fighting you. You run into voltage drops and thermal expansion. You can’t just stretch a standard lamp and hope for the best. That’s a recipe for “dark spots” right in the middle of your glass. Instead, we use a modular array of high-output quartz tubes. We spend a lot of time balancing the electrical load. Why? Because if the heat density isn’t perfectly uniform from one edge to the other, your glass is going to warp. And nobody wants to deal with that.
Why quartz and short-wave energy matter
Low-E coatings are tricky because they reflect a huge chunk of infrared energy. It’s like trying to heat a mirror. To get around this, we use short-wave infrared emitters. They punch through the glass much better than the medium-wave stuff. We also use heavy-wall quartz tubing. These tubes have to handle intense internal pressure and crazy temperatures to get your ramp-up speed where it needs to be. Industrial environments are brutal on gear, so we obsess over the seal integrity at the end caps. It keeps the gas in and stops the filaments from burning out prematurely.
Fitting it all together
These units are designed to be drop-in replacements for your old heating banks. We’ll customize the mounting brackets so they actually fit the footprint of those massive 3m+ arrays. But a quick heads-up: pushing this much heat into a wide-format line makes the whole oven chassis run hotter. Make sure your cooling systems and cable insulation are up to the task. If they aren’t rated for that kind of heat soak, your wiring will fry long before it should.
