
Getting Your SWIR Tubes to Play Nice With Your Power Grid
Short wave infrared (SWIR) heating is pretty straightforward: you’ve got a tungsten filament inside a quartz tube that gets incredibly hot. But here is the real headache. When you move a piece of machinery across a border, the heating element isn’t what keeps you up at night. It’s the voltage.
The Voltage Struggle
Most standard lamps just stick to 230V. But that doesn’t work for everyone. That’s why we build tubes specifically for 110V, 480V, and 575V. Why bother? Because it means you can toss those bulky, expensive external transformers in the trash. If you go with a 480V tube, you can pull the same amount of wattage with lower current than you would with a 110V setup. In the real world, this means you don’t need massive, thick wiring. It also stops the voltage from dropping off when you’re running long cables through a giant industrial oven. But a word of warning: don’t try to plug a 110V lamp into a 480V line. It won’t just fail. It’ll blow out instantly. We spend a lot of time tweaking the filament thickness and how the coil is wound just to make sure it matches your local grid perfectly.
The Nitty-Gritty of the Design
We use quartz for the envelopes because, frankly, anything else would melt under the heat of short wave emission. We also make sure these are drop-in replacements. Whether you’re using an R7s or an Sk15 connector, the fit has to be snug. If it’s loose, you get arcing. And arcing is a fast track to killing your lamp ends. Now, high-voltage tubes put out a massive amount of heat. It’s great for getting things warm fast, but it’s a lot for your housing to handle. You’ll want to make sure your cooling system can actually keep up with the heat building up around the tube ends. If it can’t, your seals will fail.
Where This Actually Matters
You’ll see these tubes doing the heavy lifting in PET blowing or rapid curing lines—anywhere you need heat to soak into a material quickly. When you match the voltage to whatever your factory is already running, everything just gets simpler. Your wiring is cleaner, and you have fewer points in your electrical cabinet that can break down. It just makes life easier.
