
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe (and Dry)
Let’s be honest: putting high-wattage heaters in a room full of steam and splashes is a bit like playing with fire—or in this case, electricity. Water and power don’t mix. If your insulation slips up for even a second, you’re looking at a ground fault or, worse, a dangerous shock. The real battle happens right where the quartz lamp meets the electrical terminals. That’s where things usually go wrong.
Dealing with the Steam
When your bathroom gets foggy, a thin layer of moisture settles on everything. That film can actually carry electricity across surfaces that are supposed to be insulated. To stop that from happening, we don’t just hope for the best. We use high-grade silicone seals and epoxy potting at the ends of the lamps. It basically creates a waterproof wall so the electricity stays exactly where it belongs. We test these units to make sure they hold up even when the humidity hits 90%. If it can’t pass a high-voltage leak test, it doesn’t make the cut.
Tightening Up the Terminals
The spot where the wire connects to the lamp is always the weakest link. If you use those basic, open-air connectors, they’ll corrode. It starts slow, then the resistance builds up, the joint overheats, and eventually, the whole thing just burns out. Instead, we use waterproof gaskets and heat-shrink tubing with an adhesive lining. It’s a physical barrier that keeps vapor out and the connection tight.
The Balancing Act: Heat vs. Seals
Here’s the tricky part. You want a tight seal for safety, but if you seal it too tight, the heat from the lamp gets trapped. Over time, that heat can eat away at the sealant, causing it to crack. It’s a bit of a trade-off. We use fluorosilicone because it can take the heat without breaking down. It costs a bit more than standard rubber, but it’s worth it to know the seal isn’t going to fail after a few months of use. One last thing: always wire your units into a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter). No matter how great the insulation is, a GFCI is your ultimate safety net in a wet room. It’s just common sense.
