Picking the Right Power for Your Bathroom Heater
When you’re shopping for an infrared towel rail, the temptation is to just grab the most powerful one on the shelf. But here’s the thing: bigger isn’t always better. It’s really all about how much space you’re trying to warm up. If you get it right, your towels are toasted and cozy. If you get it wrong, you’re either shivering or wasting money on your electric bill. Size matters. If you’ve got a tiny powder room—you know, those little spaces under 4m²—you don’t need a monster. A small lamp (around 200W–400W) does the trick. Because the room is so small, the heat hits the walls and your towels almost instantly. It’s quick, efficient, and plenty warm. For a standard bathroom (somewhere between 4m² and 8m²), I’d suggest stepping up to 600W–800W. There’s more air and more surface area to deal with here. If you go too low on the wattage, the heater has to work overtime. That constant cycling can actually wear out the filament faster. Then you have the master baths—the big ones over 8m². In those spaces, you’ll want 1000W or more. You might even want two different heating points. Otherwise, the heat just drifts up toward the ceiling before it ever actually touches your towel. The “Hot Zone” problem. There is a bit of a trade-off here. Sure, a 1200W lamp will dry your towel in record time, but it creates a very intense “hot zone.” If the rail is installed too close to where you actually stand, it can feel a bit overwhelming—almost like standing too close to a campfire. You just have to make sure you leave enough breathing room between the heater and the user. Saving some cash. Since infrared heat targets the object (like your towel) rather than heating the air in the room, it’s already pretty efficient. But if you want to really nail it, pair your heater with a simple timer or a motion sensor. When the wattage matches your room size perfectly, the lamp hits its peak temperature quickly and shuts off sooner. No more “over-shooting” where you accidentally heat the entire room just to get one dry towel for your morning shower.
