
Getting Your Paint Booth Heating Walls Just Right
Here is the truth about heating walls: you can’t just slap them in and forget about them. Think about it. One day you’re curing a tiny coupe, and the next, you’ve got a massive SUV taking up the whole booth. The heat needs to hit differently for each. If your infrared (IR) lamps are spread too thin, you’ll end up with cold spots on the chassis. But if they’re too crowded? You’re looking at burnt clear coat on the door panels. Not a great look. The Trick to Vertical Spacing We look at this in terms of “radiation cones.” Shortwave IR lamps throw heat in a concentrated beam, so the goal is to make those beams overlap. It creates a sort of thermal blanket. To get that right, we usually stagger the lamps or tweak the vertical spacing. If you’re dealing with taller rigs, we tend to pack more rows into the top third of the wall. Why? Because the gap between the lamp and the roofline is bigger, and you need that extra punch to bridge the distance. Power, Heat, and Airflow Now, here is where it gets tricky. More lamps mean more wattage. You’ve got to make sure your power supply and wiring can actually handle the surge. These high-wattage arrays pull a lot of current. Plus, if you pack the wall too tight just to fit a bigger car, the air in the booth heats up faster than the paint can actually flash off. It’s a balancing act. You have to match your lamp density with your exhaust system’s CFM. If you don’t, you’ll trap solvents, and that’s a recipe for a bad finish. The Real-World Trade-offs We use modular brackets because, let’s be honest, your product mix will probably change. Being able to shift lamp positions on the fly is a lifesaver. But there’s a catch. When you space lamps closer together, you lose your finger room. Swapping out a burnt-out tube becomes a pain in the neck. To fix that, we suggest using quick-disconnect connectors. It makes the whole replacement process way faster. One last thing—keep an eye on your insulation. More lamps mean more thermal stress on the wall panels. Make sure your insulation is rated for the peak heat, otherwise, you’re just paying to heat the room behind the booth.
