
Getting Your IR Lamp Layout Right for Custom Curing Walls
When you’re building a heating wall for paint curing or brake lining, you quickly realize that cars aren’t shaped the same. You’ve got everything from low-slung sports cars to massive trucks. If you just slap the lamps in a grid, you’re going to have a bad time. You’ll end up with a roof that’s scorching hot and wheels that are still cold. It doesn’t work. You have to build the layout around the actual shape of the vehicle. Where the heat actually goes We don’t just space the lamps evenly. That’s a rookie mistake. Instead, we put more lamps where there’s more surface to heat. For a big SUV or a truck, we pack the mid-section tighter because those side panels are huge and soak up a lot of energy. We stick with shortwave infrared emitters here. Why? Because they punch through the coating faster. It gets the job done quicker, which means the car spends less time sitting in the oven. But be careful. You can’t just cram every lamp you own into a small space. If you go overboard with the wattage in a tight spot, you’ll burn the paint right off the metal or warp the oven shell. Spacing and the “Striping” Problem How far the lamp sits from the car changes everything. If it’s too close, it’s too intense. Too far, and it takes forever. To fix this, we use a staggered array. Think of it like overlapping flashlight beams. This gets rid of those annoying “cold stripes” you see when lamps are just lined up in straight rows. We also slide the tubes into quartz sleeves. It’s a simple move, but it keeps the filaments safe from chemical fumes and overspray. And a quick tip on the electrics: high-density walls pull a lot of power. Your panel needs to be ready for that. A better way to handle it is to split the wall into zones. That way, if you’re curing a low coupe, you can just kill the power to the top row. It saves money on electricity and keeps your lamps from burning out too soon. The Trade-off Here’s the catch. High-density walls are great for fast ramp-up times, but they create an incredible amount of heat soak. If your ventilation isn’t beefy enough to pull that ambient heat out, your oven internals will start to warp. It’s a nightmare to fix. Just make sure your airflow can keep up with your wattage.
