
Stop Wasting Space on Massive Brake Pad Ovens
If you’re still using traditional convection ovens to cure your brake pad coatings, you know the struggle. You’re basically heating up a giant box of air and hoping that heat eventually finds its way into the material. It’s slow. It’s clunky. And it takes up way too much room. We do things differently. We use shortwave infrared (SWIR) lamps. Instead of warming the air, these lamps shoot energy straight into the coating. It’s a total shift in how the heat works—it doesn’t just sit on the surface; it penetrates deep into the material from the get-go. The best part? You can take a 20-meter convection tunnel and shrink it down to a fraction of that size without losing any productivity. That’s a lot of reclaimed floor space.
The Gear Under the Hood
Depending on how fast your line is moving, we’ll help you pick the right wattage and voltage. We usually go with high-wattage quartz tubes because they provide the raw heat flux you need to get things drying fast. We keep it simple with standard connectors like R7s or SK15, so when it’s time for a swap, you aren’t fighting with the hardware. We also often use coated quartz. This is just a fancy way of saying we tune the light so it matches exactly what your coating needs to absorb. Just a heads-up: if you’re running a high-voltage setup, make sure your control panels can handle the peak current. Otherwise, you’ll be tripping breakers every time you ramp up.
Real Talk: What Happens on the Shop Floor
Switching to IR is great for your footprint, but it changes the “vibe” of your thermal management. These lamps put out a massive amount of heat. If you don’t get your cooling fans and exhaust hoods right, you’ll end up cooking your conveyor bearings and frying your sensors. Not a good look. And while the speed is incredible, you have to be careful with your zoning. If the lamps are sitting too close to the pads, you’ll scorch the top layer before the core even gets warm. That’s why we always suggest adjustable brackets. It lets you dial in the distance until it’s just right.
