
Keeping Your Bathroom Heater from Becoming a Hazard
When you’re picking out infrared lamps for a bathroom, you have to think about more than just how warm they get. In a wet environment, the real enemies are moisture and thermal shock. If you just throw a standard heating element into a shower area, you’re asking for trouble. You need two things to stay safe: an IP44 rating and the right kind of quartz glass. Let’s talk about IP44. Basically, this means the housing is built to keep out any solid bits larger than 1mm and, more importantly, it can handle water splashing from any angle. Think about your bathroom. It’s a constant cycle of steam and direct spray. If water finds its way into the electrical junctions, it can bridge the terminals and cause an immediate arc. Not great. The IP44 seal makes sure the electricity stays exactly where it should be—inside the filament. Then there’s the glass. Here is the problem: standard glass hates sudden changes. If a cold drop of water hits a surface that’s sitting at 500°C, the glass can just crack. That’s thermal shock in action. That’s why we use explosion-proof quartz glass. It doesn’t expand or shrink much when the temperature swings wildly, so it doesn’t shatter. It also acts as your last line of defense. If a seal leaks or the filament fails, the quartz keeps the internal pressure from blowing the lamp apart. It keeps the heat in and you safe. A few things to keep in mind. High-wattage quartz lamps get hot. Fast. Because of that, you can’t just mount them flush against plastic panels or they’ll warp. Give them some breathing room or use a proper heat sink. And a quick tip on the wiring: the IP44 rating is great, but it’s only half the battle. You absolutely need a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter). Make sure your circuit breaker can handle high-surge inductive loads, otherwise, you’ll be walking over to the electrical panel to reset a tripped switch every other day.
